Where Do You Find Inspiration?
Inspiration can come from anywhere. Sometimes inspiration is drawn from a special experience or moment; other times inspiration is sparked from a nostalgic object. In the case of "The Spectacle," the special intro and outro sections were inspired by this AJ Foyt / Gilmore Racing toy (and accompanying van, trailer, mechanic and mini-A.J.) toy that I received for my fourth birthday back in the late 70's, and still proudly own.
But, the source of inspiration for the book lives beyond the toy itself... my kids have asked me questions about this toy and other old racing relics like it that I have hung onto over the years. The questions usually turn into an impromptu "Q&A" about racing.
When I was looking for a way to "package" a century's worth of Indy 500 history, I thought of a special relatable moment when a boy finds his Dad's prized toy and asks questions. The boy's initial questions leads to a complete run-through of the legendary drivers, teams and events that have embodied "The Greatest Spectacle in Racing."
Not only is this scene relatable, this approach also allowed me to incorporate prior Cooper and Avery (the kids from "Josef, The Indy Car Driver") into the book Apex Legends characters into the book, as Cooper, Avery and "soften" the non-fiction nature of the book.
The question is... if Avery and Cooper are in the book, does Grandpa Jamie make an appearance? You'll need to get a copy of "The Spectacle - Celebrating the History of the Indianapolis 500" to find out!
