Giving back has been core to Apex Legends’ mission since the content development and publishing company was founded in 2014. With the upcoming premiere of Apex Legends newest racing-themed children’s picture book, “The Spectacle – Celebrating the History of the Indianapolis 500”, this mission picks up the pace for the cause through an expanded relationship with Racing for Cancer.
Apex Legends is proud to tie the early stages of the illustrated children’s book’s sales with a Double Donation program benefiting Racing for Cancer. From March 6 and running through April 1, 20% of the proceeds of the book’s sales through www.ApexLegends.com will be donated to the charity.
Ryan Hunter-Reay, winner of the 2014 Indianapolis 500, founded Racing for Cancer in 2010 after his mother was taken too soon due to the disease. Since then, the organization has focused on raising awareness for early detection and prevention as well as obtaining funds to help support cancer facilities. Racing for Cancer uses motorsports to reach these objectives as well as bring joy to those in recovery from the disease, many of which are children.
“Selecting Racing for Cancer as a charitable partner for ‘The Spectacle,” said Chris Workman, author, illustrator, and founder of Apex Legends. “Unfortunately, I have a common bond with Ryan in that my mom was taken by cancer. In her case, the cancer was undiagnosed until it was too late to try and fight the disease. Joining the fight has been a passion point of mine and given Racing for Cancer’s great work and connection back to the sport I love, I knew this is a perfect fit for a donation program.”
Through this partnership, Apex Legends will donate a percentage of proceeds from every book and coloring book sold. 10% of proceeds from books sold through www.apexlegends.com will be donated to Racing for Cancer, however, there are several Double-Donation periods that increase that percentage to 20%. Books sold through wholesale to Amazon, Barnes & Noble and other sales channels will include a smaller donation level.
“I wanted to start this program with a strong level of support right out of the gate,” said Workman. “This unique Indy 500 book has a soft launch period where books are only available on the Apex Legends website and at the track prior to ‘The Spectacle’ being available at other retailers on April 1. It is the perfect time to increase the level of donation from sales.” Workman hopes to build the program to include book and coloring book donations to children’s hospitals.
"As we continue to seek ways to raise awareness and funds to support our initiatives, we were fortunate to meet Chris at the right time,” said Tom Vossman, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Racing for Cancer. ’The Spectacle’ allows us to reach children and families throughout the racing community and help support our cause. Chris has a unique way of connecting with children in his books and we are humbled by his support!"
