After releasing two IndyCar-themed children’s books, Apex Legends is on the fast track to publishing several new titles that focus on different forms of racing. Additional details will be shared soon, however, in honor of the 24 Hours of Le Mans (and especially the 50th Anniversary of A.J. Foyt & Dan Gurney's win of this endurance racing classic) it is timely to share some exciting news!
I’ve hinted a few times over the past few months that a licensing agreement with a major manufacturer has been in the works for a few months, and I am pleased to announce that Apex Legends will be creating a series of different books & coloring books featuring Ford products over the next few years.
Several Ford-centric books have been added to my product roadmap - the first is a concept that drove me to pursue the licensing agreement in the first place... a book featuring the iconic Ford GT40 from the 60's and present day Ford GT!
But before I provide details on the new title, here is some added context. Those of you have been following Apex Legends since the beginning know that my first book was a niche story about a boy and his father attending the ’56 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, “The Longest Day – A Childhood Race Adventure.”
In addition to featuring one of my favorite cars of all time – the venerable Jaguar D-Type – “The Longest Day” also introduced readers to a young boy named Jamison. Jamison has since appeared in my recent IndyCar books 60 years later as Grandpa Jamie. My goal is to include this character, as well as his kids and grandkids, in my books wherever possible to provide a generational tie that most race fans feel as they experience racing together.
My plan has been for Grandpa Jamie return to Le Mans in a follow-up title, and the Ford relationship has opened the door to the perfect Le Mans book opportunity!
Preliminary work on a new Le Mans book featuring the Ford GT sportscar program has begun. The project is being developed collaboratively with Chip Ganassi Racing’s IMSA and WEC race team.
What’s great about the Jamison / Grandpa Jamie character is that I can incorporate him multiple timeframes. So, while Grandpa Jamie and members of his family will appear at present day Le Mans, the story will also incorporate elements of the original GT40 Le Mans tale by placing Jamison in 1967 as he witnessing an amazing “All-American” win by A.J. Foyt and Dan Gurney.
Below is a draft sketch. More details will be available in the coming months, including pre-order opportunities beginning later this year around the time of the Petit Le Mans.
If possible, the book will be released prior to the Holidays however a conservative estimate is a launch at the 2018 Rolex 24. Why the delay? I have another book I am working to complete prior to this one; stay tuned for the official announcement! I've set up preliminary book product pages for both of these new items.
