For decades, motorsports have enjoyed a strong, loyal fan base. As these fans get older, race series such as the Verizon IndyCar Series are focused on engaging young fans. However, it isn’t easy to reach kids due to the many distractions they face from video games, TV and other factors. This May Apex Legends, a publisher of racing-themed kids' books & coloring books, is launching a #RacingReader book donation program aimed at placing books into school and public libraries to motivate youngsters to read and learn about Indy Car racing.
"Many of the books we sell end up in the hands of race fans and serve as a great way them to share their love of racing with their kids," said Chris Workman, author / illustrator, and owner of Apex Legends. "It's incredible to be able to foster that parent-child interaction, especially since the books are designed to teach life lessons along with realistic racing content. But, it is even more important to get these books in front of kids who may not know much about cars or racing. Often all it takes to unlock a lifelong interest in to pick up a book and libraries are the perfect place to do this."
2017 Verizon IndyCar Series Champion and subject of the book, "Josef, The Indy Car Driver," added "I know when I was a kid when I saw something exciting and fun on the library shelf, I would pick it up and start reading it regardless of the subject matter. Growing kids’ interest in racing and IndyCar will be a natural effect of getting these books placed at libraries."
The #RacingReader donation program is simple – for every copy of “Josef, The Indy Car Driver” and “The Spectacle” purchased at apexlegends.com, the buyer will receive a second book with info on how to donate it to the school or public library of their choice. If the participant is active on social media, they are encouraged to share that the book is now available in their community for kids to read.
"Sure, the #RacingReader donation program puts a little extra work on the fans who participate, but the program is a simple way to empower passionate race fans to impact their community, motivate kids to read and lay the groundwork for a vibrant future for the sport they love," said Workman. "I've heard from parents who have kids that weren't very interested in racing who have become big fans after reading these books!"
A purchase isn’t required to participate; people can request that their public library carry Apex Legends products by providing title name, author, and ISBN information. ISBN#'s for all books can be found at apexlegends.com. And, a portion of proceeds from books sold at the track and through other retailers like Amazon will be pooled for additional donations.
